Premarital Counseling has been shown to really give couples an advantage toward forming stronger bonds after marriage, and I have always enjoyed this work tremendously. The time before a wedding is often so fraught with so many strong emotions: excitement, happiness and love, but also anxiety at times and real stress.
Honest, respectful discussion of some important topics can be so beneficial in avoiding problems down the road. In Imago community we have a saying “Start Right, Stay Connected”. The kinds of topics I can help you communicate about in terms of expectations, preferences and boundaries are:
Through the Imago Dialogue techniques, partners can communicate their deepest hopes and dreams, and share their deepest fears, so that they can be reassured and clear re: what kind of life they are signing up for. These communication techniques also provide a roadmap for partners to resolve conflict without rancor. This is a wonderful way to inoculate their partnership from disconnection in the future.
A wonderful exercise in Premarital Therapy is helping Partners construct a “Shared Vision “of the life and relationship of their dreams. This is a structured exercise where each person reflects on all the aspects of their connection, relationship and life, and writes out how each wishes it to be. Through sharing their dreams via the Imago Dialogue, they come to create a shared Statement of the Shared Life they would like to have, in all its particulars. When they do this, and write it out, it makes it much more likely to really happen.
